Luck Pillars: How to Read a Ten-Year Cycle

A luck pillar (大运) is your month pillar, still walking. That is the whole mechanism. Take the month pillar your chart already has, step it one position along the sixty-pillar cycle, and hold that position for ten years — then step again, eight times.

There is no forecasting in the construction. Everyone born in the same month of the same year, running the same direction, receives the same eight characters. What makes the sequence yours is which direction it runs, and that depends on two inputs: your year stem and your gender.

Same month, opposite directions

The classical rule is a pairing, not a measurement:

Year stem Male chart Female chart
Yang 甲 丙 戊 庚 壬 forward 顺排 backward 逆排
Yin 乙 丁 己 辛 癸 backward 逆排 forward 顺排

Forward means stepping from your month pillar towards later positions in the cycle; backward means the reverse. The rule is built on the same yin–yang pairing logic that structures the rest of the system, and it is worth stating plainly that it is an arrangement convention rather than an empirical claim about men and women. Our engine applies it and prints the direction on every result rather than assuming one.

Note what this means: the same chart read as male and as female can produce two disjoint sets of eight pillars. Not two sets with some overlap — disjoint. The worked example below is exactly that case.

The 起运 age is a countdown, not a birthday

The eight pillars do not start at birth. They start at the 起运 age, and the classical method for finding it is arithmetic, not a lookup table:

  1. Measure the interval from your birth to the nearest 节 — one of the twelve boundary solar terms — counted only in the direction you are running.
  2. Convert that interval at three days to one year of 起运 age, one day to four months, and one 时辰 (two hours) to ten days.

That is the entire calculation, and it is why the 起运 age can be fractional. A birth that falls shortly after a 节 can produce an interval shorter than the smallest unit classical practice recognised — which rounds to a 起运 age of zero. That is not a bug; it means the first ten-year pillar begins essentially at birth.

The eight pillars together cover roughly eighty years. Everything before your 起运 age sits outside all of them.

One birth, two sets of eight pillars

Take the chart used across this site: 4 February 1990, 10:00, Taipei — 己巳 丁丑 庚子 辛巳, day master 庚 Yang Metal. The year stem 己 is yin, so the two readings run in opposite directions. Every figure below was computed by the engine when the luck pillars calculator page was built.

Read as male — backward, counting to 小寒 gives a 起运 age of 9 years 10 months, first pillar starting 1999-12-04:

# Pillar Years Ages Ten god

Read as female — forward, counting to 立春 gives a 起运 age of zero, because the birth at 10:00 falls fourteen minutes before 立春 that year (10:14) — an interval shorter than one 时辰:

# Pillar Years Ages Ten god

Compare the two columns. Not one pillar appears in both lists. Same date, same minute, same four pillars, same day master — and sixteen different characters of luck pillar.

This is the single most useful thing to know about the system before reading anyone else's interpretation: a site that reports your luck pillars without telling you which direction it ran is reporting one of two possible answers and not saying which.

Where this year sits

The ten-year pillar sets the decade; the annual pillar (流年) sets the year inside it. The annual pillar is pure arithmetic — calendar year Y has the year pillar at position (Y − 4) in the sixty-pillar cycle, because 1984 was 甲子 — so 2026 is 丙午.

Inside the male reading, 2026 falls in pillar 3, 甲戌 (2019–2028). Inside the female reading, the same year falls in pillar 4, 辛巳 (2020–2029). Identical year, entirely different decade — and the same annual characters would be read differently again inside a different block, which is why the calculator draws the years inside their blocks instead of listing them separately.

Luck pillars bring in what your chart does not have

Look back at the male sequence's ten gods. The original chart holds no Eating God, no Indirect Wealth and no Direct Wealth — the wealth pool is empty because the chart contains no wood, as the missing element article sets out. But the eight pillars carry 正财, 偏财 and 食神 in turn. The luck sequence steps through positions your month pillar never occupied, and those positions have their own ten gods.

That is worth stating carefully, because it is easy to misread. It does not mean the sequence arrives to "supply what you lack". It means a ten god is a name for a position in the cycle relative to your day master — so a position your original chart never held naturally carries a name your original chart never used. The ten gods article makes the same point from the other end.

What we leave blank

Three omissions are deliberate, and each of them is a place where other tools routinely fill in the gap:

  • Before your 起运 age. Those years belong to no pillar. The timeline shows that early stretch as its own segment rather than assigning it to a pillar that has not begun.
  • After pillar eight. Eight pillars cover about eighty years. We compute eight and stop. The annual timeline keeps running for a hundred years, but there is no fabricated ninth and tenth block.
  • Favourable or unfavourable. This is the big one. Deciding whether a pillar helps needs a strength assessment and a 用神 judgement, and competent practitioners disagree — sometimes on the same chart. A tool that stamps "good decade" on a pillar has made a judgement call and printed it as if it were arithmetic. We give you the direction, the 起运 age, the eight pillars, the ten-god name of each, and a hundred-year timeline; the interpretation is where the Life Map report picks up, written from your chart rather than from the pillar names alone.

Common questions

Why did my luck pillars change when I switched gender?

Because gender is one of the two inputs that fix the direction, and the direction decides the entire sequence — including which boundary 节 the 起运 age is counted to. Switching it can flip you from backward to forward, which produces a different set of eight pillars and a different 起运 age. The result page states both so the difference is visible rather than mysterious. If you leave gender blank, the engine applies the yang-year default and says so.

Do I need my exact birth time for luck pillars?

Usually the date is enough for the eight pillars, because they step from your month pillar. The time matters for the 起运 age, which is measured to the nearest 节 to the minute. Without a time we take noon, which can shift the 起运 age by a few months, and the result says when that applies. A birth near a 节 boundary is the case where the time genuinely changes the answer — see whether true solar time changes your chart.

My 起运 age came out as zero. Is that wrong?

No. The conversion counts in 时辰, and it compares your birth to the boundary 节 in the direction you are running. Born shortly after that 节 and the interval is smaller than one 时辰, so it rounds to zero. Your first pillar starts at birth.

How do I actually use a luck pillar?

Read its stem's ten god against your day master first, then its branch — including the hidden stems, because the branch is usually doing more work than the stem. Then read the annual pillars inside it. And read the pillar for conditions, not events: the same pillar lands very differently in a chart that supports it and one that does not, which is precisely the part that requires a judgement rather than a lookup.
