Luck pillars calculator
Your luck pillars (大运) are eight ten-year periods that begin at your 起运 age and run for the rest of your life. You do not choose them and you cannot shift them: the engine derives the whole sequence from your month pillar plus one question — which way through the sixty-pillar cycle your chart runs. This tool shows all eight pillars, the age each one starts, and where this year sits inside them.
The short version
Eight ten-year pillars, stepped one position at a time from your month pillar. The direction is forward if your birth year’s stem is yang and the chart is male, or yin and female; backward otherwise. The distance from your birth to the nearest 节, counted only in the direction you are running, converts at three days to one year of 起运 age.
Which means two people born the same day and hour can run in opposite directions and receive entirely different sets of eight pillars. That follows from the classical rule, and the result page states which direction it used rather than hiding it.

Date and time first — gender only sets the direction the cycles run. The chart is computed in your browser: nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no limit on how many times you recalculate.
How it’s calculated
- 1
Fix the direction
The year stem’s polarity sets the base — yang years count forward, yin years count backward — and gender flips it. Yang year with a male chart, or yin year with a female chart, runs forward. The engine reads the year stem from the pillar it already locked to the exact moment of 立春, so this decision never drifts at a year boundary.
- 2
Count to the boundary 节
Only the twelve 节 count — 立春, 惊蛰, 清明 … 小寒. The twelve 中气 between them do not. The engine takes the interval from your birth to the nearest 节 in the direction you are running, resolved to the minute from the same solar-term table that produced your month pillar.
- 3
Convert the interval to an age
Classical conversion: three days of interval become one year of 起运 age, one day becomes four months, and one 时辰 becomes ten days. Then the month pillar is stepped one position at a time through the sixty-pillar cycle, one step per decade, for eight steps.
The full rule set — every convention, in order, with the engine field names — is published on the methodology page.
What a luck pillar actually is
A luck pillar is not a forecast and not a personal timeline. It is your month pillar continuing its walk through the sixty-pillar cycle. Everyone born in the same month of the same year, running in the same direction, receives the same eight characters — the pillar describes the decade’s conditions, and what a person does inside those conditions is not in the pillar.
This is why the same pillar can be excellent for one chart and difficult for another. The pillar itself carries no verdict: the reading comes from how its stem and branch relate to your day master and to the rest of your chart, which is why the ten-god name of each pillar matters more than the names of the characters.
The eight pillars cover roughly eighty years. We show exactly eight and leave the rest of the timeline blank rather than inventing a ninth and tenth step to fill a hundred-year grid.
Why the direction depends on gender
The classical rule pairs polarity with gender: yang year and male, or yin year and female, run forward from the month pillar; the other two combinations run backward. It is an arrangement rule built on the same yin–yang pairing logic that structures the rest of the system, not an empirical claim about men and women.
It is worth seeing how much this one input changes, because most calculators quietly assume an answer. Take the chart used across this site — born 4 February 1990, 10:00 in Taipei, which gives 己巳 丁丑 庚子 辛巳. The year stem 己 is yin.
Read as male, the cycles run backward: the first pillar is 丙子 and the countdown to the previous 节 (小寒) gives a 起运 age of nine years and ten months. Read as female, they run forward instead: the first pillar becomes 戊寅 and, because the birth falls fourteen minutes before 立春, the interval rounds away to a 起运 age of zero. Same date, same minute, same day master — sixteen different characters of luck pillar across the two readings.
If you leave gender blank, the engine applies the yang-year default and says so on the result. That is a stated assumption, not a hidden one.
The 起运 age is a countdown, not a birthday
Classical practice never looked up a 起运 age in a table. It counted the days from the birth to the boundary 节 and divided by three, because three days of real interval stand in for one year of the pillar sequence. Everything after that follows arithmetically: the remainder of a day becomes four months, and the remainder of a day measured in 时辰 becomes ten days each.
The granularity of that count is a 时辰 — two hours. So a birth that falls just after a 节 can produce a 起运 age of zero, and that is not a bug: the interval really is shorter than the smallest unit the classical conversion recognises. Our worked example below lands in exactly that situation if you switch the gender, which is why we show both readings rather than the flattering one.
A 起运 age also comes with a conventional way of naming the blocks. The first block is labelled from the start of the following year — nine years and ten months of interval becomes a first block beginning at age ten — so the fractional part is carried into the block labels rather than discarded.
Luck pillar and annual pillar are different clocks
The ten-year pillar (大运) sets the background for a decade; the annual pillar (流年) sets the year inside it. The annual pillar is pure arithmetic — the year pillar of calendar year Y is position (Y − 4) in the sixty-pillar cycle, because 1984 was 甲子 — which is why the timeline below can run a hundred years forward without a single lookup.
Read together, not separately. A year whose branch clashes with your current luck pillar is doing something different from the same year inside a luck pillar that supports it, even though the annual characters are identical. This is the one relationship on the timeline worth learning first: the annual pillar is always interpreted on top of the decade it falls in.
The timeline marks the current year so you can see which block you are standing in, and how many years of it remain. Everything before your 起运 age sits outside any block, and the timeline shows that early stretch as its own segment rather than assigning it to a pillar that has not started.
- 大运 — ten years, from your month pillar, one step per decade
- 流年 — one year, from the calendar, always read inside a 大运
- 起运 — the age your first 大运 begins, from the interval to the boundary 节
How we read them — and what we leave out
Each pillar’s stem has a ten-god name relative to your day master, and the result page states it. That is the part we can compute exactly: the relationship between two characters is fixed by the tables published on the methodology page.
What we do not do is declare a pillar favourable or unfavourable. That judgement needs a strength assessment and a 用神 decision — which element the chart wants more of — and competent practitioners disagree about those, sometimes on the same chart. A tool that stamps “good decade” on a pillar is making a judgement call and presenting it as arithmetic.
So the free result gives you the structure: the direction, the 起运 age, all eight pillars, the ten-god name of each, and a hundred-year timeline. The interpretation is where the Life Map report picks up, and it is written from your chart rather than from the pillar names alone.

Born fourteen minutes before the year boundary
The birth is 10:00 on 4 February 1990; 立春 that year fell at 10:14. That gap decides the whole page. Running backward, the engine counts 9 years 10 months to 小寒 and starts the sequence at 丙子 on 1999-12-04. Running forward instead, the nearest 节 is 立春 itself — fourteen minutes away, which is less than one 时辰, so the 起运 age comes out as zero and the sequence starts at 戊寅 from birth. One birth, two entirely different sets of eight pillars, decided by a rule we state rather than assume.
Engine v1.1.0 · both readings computed live from the same four pillars: 起运 9y 10m counting back to 小寒, versus 0y 0m counting forward to 立春. Change either input and the numbers move — that is the point.
The direction rule, in full
Four combinations, and nothing else feeds into this decision. The site’s worked example has the year stem 己, which is yin — so it lands on the two rows marked below, and the two readings run in opposite directions.

The 起运 conversion, and the twelve 节
Only the twelve 节 count toward 起运 — the twelve 中气 between them do not. Each 节 opens the month whose branch it is named for, which is why the month pillar and the 起运 countdown are read from the same table.

Annual pillars need no table
The year pillar of calendar year Y is position (Y − 4) in the sixty-pillar cycle, because 1984 was 甲子. That is the whole rule — which is how the timeline on this page can run a hundred years forward without a single lookup. The one caveat is the boundary: a year pillar takes effect at 立春, so “the 2026 pillar” means the one that begins at 立春 2026.

Questions
- What is a luck pillar in BaZi?
- A luck pillar (大运) is one of eight ten-year periods that follow your 起运 age. The eight pillars are produced by stepping your month pillar through the sixty-pillar cycle, one step per decade, in the direction your chart runs. They describe the decade’s conditions rather than events, and they are read against the day master — the same pillar means something different in a different chart.
- Do I need my exact birth time for this?
- For the eight pillars themselves, the date is usually enough, because they step from your month pillar. For the 起运 age the time matters: the engine measures the interval from your birth to the nearest 节, and three days of that interval become one year. Without a birth time we take noon, which can move the 起运 age by a few months; the result says so when that applies.
- Why do my luck pillars change when I switch gender?
- Because the classical rule that fixes the direction is built on gender and polarity together: yang year with a male chart, or yin year with a female chart, runs forward. Switch it and the sequence steps the other way, producing a different set of eight pillars, and the boundary 节 being counted to changes too. We show the direction and the boundary on the result so the difference is visible rather than mysterious.
- My 起运 age came out as zero — is that a bug?
- No. The classical conversion counts in 时辰, and it compares your birth to the boundary 节 in the direction you are running. If you were born shortly after that 节, the interval can be smaller than one 时辰, and it rounds to zero. It means your first ten-year pillar begins essentially at birth.
- How long do the luck pillars last, and what happens after them?
- Eight pillars cover roughly eighty years. The engine computes exactly eight and stops — the timeline keeps showing annual pillars for the full hundred years, but there is no ninth luck block, because we would rather leave the gap visible than fill it with a pillar the method does not produce.
- What is the difference between 大运 and 流年?
- 大运 is the ten-year pillar, 流年 is the single-year pillar. The annual pillar is arithmetic: calendar year Y has the year pillar at position (Y − 4) in the sixty-pillar cycle. The two are read together — the same annual pillar behaves differently depending on the luck pillar it lands in — which is why the timeline places the years inside their blocks instead of listing them separately.
